The Key to Carantryla House

It is just an old key, but it unlocked the main door to one of County Galway's  "Big Houses". Carantryla House, located near Dunmore, County Galway was demolished around the 1940s. My great-grandfather John Deneny was caretaker at the house until Major Handcock returned in the 1920s.  Despite the attempts to erase the past, its memory lingers on.

You can see a picture of the Carantryla house if you search on the old name Carrowantryla. Its on the NUI Galway page. This picture also appeared in a newspaper some years ago. The newspaper byline referred to it as 'Carrantrila' or 'Carantrily'.I have done some looking at the Deneny records from Cavan if you are interested.

    1. The place has a variety of spellings. I would be interested in Deneny of Cavan.
